Description

Olympus Armor skin for Plague Rider. Had a tough time achieving the opalescent effect on the wings, but here's a brief summary of how I understand the opal effect. Refracted colors are warmer on parts of the surface perpendicular to the light, they shift towards cooler colors as they turn away from the light. For some reason they skip the blue hues entirely, maybe this has something to do with the composition of opal stone but I never saw any opal with blue/purple light refracted out, and I think thats one of the keys to making it seem opalescent. The transitions are a little uneven, so sometimes you see some green in a more reddish area and this is probably just the unevenness of the formation of crystal structure inside the stone. I used a color dodge layer (with the two default options in layer styles turned off) with a mask in the shapes of the facets. There should be some variety of size of facets and they can't be completely hard-edged and opaque-you have to go in and erase some edges and smudge some to simulate the look that they are IN the stone and parts of it might be obscured by stone physically between you and the facet reflecting light. Anyway, I probably botched some fundamental physics of light there but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
